For many people, Christmas is synonymous with festivity, gifts, decorations, and grand celebrations. However, are our hearts truly aware of the true meaning of Christmas? Christmas is not merely an annual celebration, but a moment to reflect on God’s great love, when He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to the world to save humanity.
Waiting for Christmas is not just about counting the days, but also preparing the heart. In Luke 2:10-11, the angel said to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be for all people: Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” This joy is not merely because of the birth of a baby, but because of the presence of the Savior who brings hope to the world.
We often get caught up in the year-end busyness: shopping for gifts, making holiday plans, or decorating the house. None of these are wrong, but let us not celebrate Christmas without a heart aware of its main reason. Christmas reminds us of Jesus’ humility, who was born in a manger, not in a palace (Luke 2:7). He came to show that God’s love is not limited by status, place, or power.
How to wait for Christmas with an aware heart?
- Reflecting on the meaning of Christ’s coming. Christmas is the greatest sign of God’s love, as written in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
- Filling the heart with gratitude. Instead of focusing only on material things, we can count God’s blessings throughout the year and give thanks for His faithful love.
- Sharing love with others. Christmas is the perfect time to pay attention to those who are lonely or in need of support. The love we give becomes a tangible expression of Christ’s love.
Christmas is about God’s presence in our lives. No matter how grand or simple our celebration is, Christmas will feel meaningful if our hearts are ready to welcome Jesus with full awareness. Just like the shepherds who left the fields to come see baby Jesus, we are also invited to leave our busyness for a moment to focus on His presence.
Let us ask ourselves: Am I truly ready to welcome Christmas, not just with outward decorations, but with a sincere heart? A heart aware of Christ’s love will see Christmas as a moment of encounter with God, not merely an annual tradition.
