Many people think that joy only comes when things are going well. We feel happy when plans go smoothly, prayers are answered, or life feels easy. However, the Bible teaches that true joy does not depend on circumstances, but on our relationship with God. Joy that comes from God remains even when the storms of life hit.
Paul is a real example of this kind of joy. In Philippians 4:4, he writes, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” Surprisingly, Paul wrote this letter while he was in prison. His joy was not because of good circumstances, but because he knew that God was still sovereign and accompanying his life.
Joy from God is not a temporary feeling, but a condition of the heart full of confidence in His love. The world offers happiness that quickly fades, depending on what we have or experience. But true joy, as promised by Jesus, cannot be taken away by anyone. John 16:22 says, “So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”
How can we experience this kind of joy?
- Focus on God, not on circumstances. When we look at God’s goodness and His promises, we can remain thankful even in difficult situations.
- Be thankful in all things. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Godโs will for you in Christ Jesus.” Gratitude opens the door to true joy.
- Live in the power of the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22 reminds us that joy is a fruit of the Spirit. This means, the closer we are to God, the more our hearts are filled with joy that does not depend on circumstances.
Joy does not mean we never feel sadness or disappointment. However, in the midst of sorrow, we still have hope because we know God is working behind every situation. True joy arises when we believe that all things work together for good for those who love God (Romans 8:28).
Your life may currently be full of challenges, but remember that true joy does not come from what happens, but from who is with you. If God is with us, no situation can take away our peace and joy.
