No precious metal shines immediately without going through fire. Likewise, our lives before God. Purification often comes through a long process that is uncomfortable, even painful, but it is precisely there that our faith and character are formed. God is not in a hurry, because He is more interested in who we become, not just what we achieve.
In 1 Peter 1:6-7 it is written, “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials.
The purpose of all this is to prove the purity of your faith โ which is far more valuable than perishable gold, which is tested by fire. Like gold, our faith is also tested and purified through the heat of life.
The long process often makes us ask, “Why hasn’t God acted yet?” However, we forget that the waiting period is part of His great plan. Moses had to wait 40 years in the wilderness before God used him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt (Exodus 3:10-12). Joseph experienced betrayal, exile, and years of imprisonment before finally being elevated to a ruler in Egypt (Genesis 41:41).
Their process is not instant, but every second is used by God to prepare the heart and character.
Purification is about the formation of the heart. God allows a long process not because He is cruel, but because He loves us. Hebrews 12:11 says, โNo discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.โ Every tear and struggle we experience is part of spiritual training that produces strength and maturity in faith.
How do we respond to this long process?
- Keep trusting in God’s goodness. Do not judge God’s love by temporary circumstances.
- Learn to obey in the midst of waiting. Small daily obedience is proof that we trust in His plan.
- Be grateful at every stage. Gratitude keeps our hearts soft and not bitter when facing challenges.
A purified life is a life ready to be used by God. Without the process, we might succeed quickly, but we will not have strong roots. God wants us not only to bear fruit but also to be tested and not easily shaken when storms come.
If right now you feel like you are in a hot “fire,” remember that the fire is not to destroy you, but to purify you. When this long process is complete, the shine of your faith will be far more beautiful than before.
