One of the things that most often steals our joy is the habit of comparing ourselves to others. We see other people’s lives that seem more successful, more blessed, or reaching their goals faster, then we start asking, โWhy isnโt my life like that?โ Yet, God’s plan for each person is unique and cannot be equated.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, โFor I know the plans I have for you,โ declares the LORD, โplans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.โ God never writes our life story using the same template. Our paths may differ, but all are under His perfect control.
Comparing our lives to others will only make us feel inadequate, even though God views the value of our lives from an eternal perspective. When Peter asked Jesus about John’s fate (John 21:21-22), Jesus answered, โIf I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.โ Jesusโ answer is clear: focus on your own calling, not on someone elseโs journey.
Everyone has different times and seasons. Like flowers that do not bloom all at once, each of us will โblossomโ in due time. God is working on us in a unique way, and what seems slow does not mean failure. In fact, during the waiting period, God is preparing our hearts and capacity to receive His blessings.
How can we stop comparing?
- Realize that our identity is in Christ, not in achievements. Ephesians 2:10 says, โFor we are Godโs handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.โ Each of us is a special work of Godโs hands.
- Be thankful for what you have. Gratitude shifts focus from lack to Godโs presence.
- Trust in Godโs timing. What looks โlateโ to humans may be the perfect time in Godโs eyes.
When we stop comparing, we will find true peace and joy. God does not ask us to be like others, but to be ourselves faithfully following Him. Believe that Godโs plan for your life is just as valuable as His plan for others.
Life is not about who arrives fastest, but who faithfully walks with God until the end. Letโs stop looking at othersโ paths and focus on what God is doing within us.
